Standards

Naturland established new norms in 2005 with its  social standards

Now its assembly of delegates has erected a third pillar of sustainability to provide added support to our organic association´s holistic concept:

Naturland Fair Standards

On the strength of its international involvement and its close co-operation with fair trade organisations, Naturland has developed fair trade standards which are applicable throughout the world. They are the logical consequence of the “Naturland Criteria for Fair Trade Partnerships” which were evolved in 2006.

Existing standards, such as the "Charter of Fair Trade Principles" and the principles of FINE, the international umbrella organisation of fair trade, were taken as the minimum requirements for the development of the Naturland fair trade standards.

In the case of certification to Naturland’s fair trade standards, this is a voluntary supplementary certification procedure and examination can be done simultaneously with annual inspection to corroborate conformity with organic standards.

In future, Naturland members and partners who wish to be certified for compliance with its fair trade standards must meet the following seven requirements laid down in the standards:

  1. social responsibility such as fair wages, freedom of association, human rights and no child labour
  2. reliable trade relationships long-term, respectful co-operation with all trading partners
  3. fair producer prices – co-operative pricing to cover the cost of production and earn an appropriate profit
  4. acquisition of raw materials from local sources – priority given to means of production and raw goods from local sources
  5. joint quality assurance – mutual trust and co-operation between trading partners, even when problems occur
  6. social involvement – investment in jobs and in environmental, social, welfare, cultural and educational projects
  7. corporate strategy and transparency fair partnership idea as mission statement and written records of implementation
