Wild or farmed?

Finfish, Shellfish, and algae are not only healthy and tasty elements of modern cuisine, but also indispensable base for nutrition of the growing world population. Nowadays, the major part of all fish and seafood is still wild caught from the oceans, the lakes, and the rivers.
More than a third, however, originates from aquaculture - the systematic cultivation and reproduction in ponds, net pens, mussel lines, enclosures etc..
Stocks under pressure
Many wild fish stocks are already over-exploited, partly to an extent that leaves future recovery uncertain. But also aquaculture - often acclaimed to as the "Blue Revolution" with enormous growth rates - is struggling with various problem areas:
Degradation of invaluable eco-systems, culture systems not addressing the animals' behavioural needs, and non-sustainable origin of feed-stuff have to be named in this context.
Strict standards

Naturland's main concern is the sustainable use of resources, in ecological, social, and economical respect. Since the mid-nineties, we are very successfully conducting Organic Aquaculture projects, always with the focus on certification against specific and detailed standards.
A recently started initiative is "Naturland Wildfish" - the certifciation of sustainable capture fishery.
